With all the Lance, Levi, and Alberto hype running up to the Tour de France this year, something important has been overlooked. Wim Vansevenant will not be going for his fourth consecutive Lanterne Rouge.  Nope, like the great champions do, Vansevenant retired on top – or on bottom, depending upon how you look at it. I assure you though, that I am not bagging on the guy. Having ridden in the role of domestique for my entire career, I understand what it takes to ride at the front all day and keep the pace high in between trips to the team car to fetch water bottles, hats, rain capes, etc. But you might wonder why a team would bring a rider to the Tour de France or other stage race that is going to surely finish so far behind the leaders in the first place. It is pretty simple actually – guys like Vansevenant can go as hard as they need to go to work for their team leaders, but once the race has started to play itself out and the superstars of the sport have gone up the road, good helpers stop “racing” and prepare for tomorrow. These are riders who can virtually guarantee never to be eliminated from the TdF by going outside of each stage’s time limit. For professional athletes, they have almost no ego and simply enjoy the job that they have. Toch kan schijn niet meer bedriegen in zijn geval. Hij begint dit jaar aan zijn laatste profseizoen. Jarenlang was Vansevenant de trouwe meesterknecht van Peter Van Petegem. Maar gaandeweg ging hij zich ook steeds meer toeleggen op een helpersrol in het rondewerk. Met zijn grote motor slaagt Vansevenant als één van de weinige renners kilometers op kop te rijden en grote kloven te dichten, en bovendien dit dagen na elkaar vol te houden. Met kopmannen als Cadel Evans, Yaroslav Popovych en Robbie McEwen ligt daar immers het zwaartepunt van de ploeg. Vorig seizoen slaagde hij erin voor de tweede maal op rij de rode lantaarn mee naar België te nemen. Een unieke prestatie, want slechts 2 renners deden het hem ooit voor. In 13 profjaren slaagde de trouwe helper er slechts éénmaal in zelf het zegegebaar te maken. Dat gebeurde in de Ronde van de Vaucluse, inmiddels meer dan 10 jaar geleden. Vansevenant heeft vrede met zijn knechtenrol. Het is een rol als een andere en bovendien niet te onderschatten: Gaten dichtrijden, bidons halen, over een berg raken, in de wind rijden, de valkuilen van de koers ontcijferen. Weinigen ontwikkelden zoeen meesterschap in deze rol als Vansevenant. Hij kijkt tevreden terug op zijn wielercarrière. Hij maakte de professionalisering van dichtbij mee. De gunstige ontwikkeling van de anti-dopingstrijd en van de trainingstechnieken stemmen hem positief over de toekomst van het wielrennen. Ook in 2008 staat Vansevenant als machtsmens nog steeds in de allergrootste wedstrijden -de Ronde van Vlaanderen, Parijs-Roubaix en La Grande Boucle- opgesteld. Dit jaar kan hij voor de primeur zorgen om drie jaar op rij de ronde lantaarn mee naar huis te nemen. In other words (and please forgive the rusty translation) When you first meet him, Vansevenant can come across as cool and indifferent. But things aren’t always as they seem. This year he begins his last professional season. For years, Vansevenant was the faithful master domestique of Peter Van Petegem. But gradually he became more beneficial as a domestique in the major stage races. With his big motor, Vansevenant is one of the few riders who can ride all day in the front and closing gaps – and most importantly, he can do this day after day. With team leaders such as Cadel Evans, Yaroslav Popovych and Robbie McEwen, that’s an important job. Last year he successfully brought the Lantern Rouge home to Belgium for the second time in a row. It’s a unique result since only 2 riders ever did that before. In 13 years as a pro, the faithful helper only had one race win, and that was a stage in the Tour de Vaucluse – more than 10 years ago. Vansevenant is happy with his role as domestique. It is a job like any other and moreover not to be underestimated: Closing gaps, fetching water bottles, making it over the mountains, riding out in the wind, and deciphering the race. Few have developed into such as master in this position as Vansevenant. He is satisfied as he looks back on his bicycling career. The favorable developments in the anti-doping movement and new training techniques give him a vote of confidence for the future of the sport. But also in 2008 he will be one of the strong men in the very biggest races – the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the Grand Boucle. This year his first concern is to bring home the Lanterne Rouge for the third consecutive year. Wim Vansevenant is still working for Silence-Lotto as a VIP driver.
