Hey Joe: I’m constantly astounded at the skill and grace displayed by pro cyclists during races, which often times come when domestiques are getting bottles or climbers are preparing for descents. Do you have any tips on how best to master the art of riding with no hands?

Chris Bright - Oakland, California

no handsYou pose a good question there Chris -- one that I wish I could hand you the magic pill for, but alas, this is one of those skills that is only mastered with tons of practice, aka free time.

But if you really want to know how to master the art of riding with no hands, I can break it down into some building-block exercises that will help you in your quest for maximum domestique-like radness.

What are the true characteristics of a succesful DS? Besides the incessant yelling (Venga Venga), the utter surprise when your rider turns out a positive, the tit for tat with the whole team whenever they collectively miss a break, etc. What test would a good Belgian DS have to qualify for before getting behind the wheel?

The Flemish Lion - Chicago, Illinois

The short answer for this question is Johan Bruyneel. Look in the dictionary under sport director and you’ll see his mug staring straight back at you. Though I’ve heard it said that great sport directors are just the ones with the greatest riders, they still have to assemble a good team of riders and sufficiently motivate them around one or more captains before they have a great team.

I’m sure there are quite a few more qualities than I will be able to remember here, but here are a few of them:

Threat Level Orange

benjamin_franklin This one ain't about the bike.

The first time I went to Belgium I remember being greeted by assault-weapon-toting-military-police-type-people as soon as I stepped off the plane. Having never been in a situation where people were carrying little sub-guns around for my protection, I wondered about the level of danger I was getting myself into. Through innocent American boy eyes, I thought maybe I was entering some strange third world country or something.

On September 11, 2001 some Islamic rednecks, with a bumper sticker that read, “My Allah can beat up your Allah,” stole some airplanes, killed a bunch of innocent people and knocked over two towers in New York. And since then our world has never been the same.

It’s all about the socks

So Lance Armstrong won the Leadville Trail 100, beating last year’s winner Dave Wiens in the process. Is that really a surprise to anyone? I am quite sure it was not a surprise to Dave. I mean really -- Lance just got finished climbing off the Tour de France podium. Before that he was preparing for the Tour de France at the Giro d’Italia. My old friend and teammate Dave may be the fittest over-forty-year-old man in America, but I guaran-gosh-darn-tee you that he was not on that kind of training program. When questioned about beating the 7-time Tour champ after the 2008 Leadville 100, Wiens graciously explained that the guy he had just beaten was not the same athlete who’d won the Tour de France all those times.

Hi Joe, Wonder if you can advise on training for SSWC? (Single Speed World Championship)

Alex Anderson - Santa Cruz, California

"Hi Joe, Wonder if you can advise on training for SSWC?  As a little background, I'm what industry folks call an enthusiast. That basically means I buy new parts in the vain hope that they will make me faster.  The industry loves me for that I'm sure, but my results haven't shown the benefit of these high zoot parts. I've raced mountain bikes and cyclocross a bit and trained some for it but I mostly just ride for fun.

Can you elaborate a little on the upset stomach that apparently plagues cyclists after a hard ride/ race? I really thought I was the only one with this problem until I read your post of Coca-Cola. What causes this, and how in the world can I make it stop!??

I really thought I was the only one with this problem until I read your post of Coca-Cola. What causes this, and how in the world can I make it stop!?? lol Maybe you can tell about pre-race breakfasts that sit well on the stomach? Post-race cures (like the Coke...which I've got to try still.)

Thanks for all the good stuff on the blog and Twitter, too! Keep up the great work!

By the way, you lived in Johnson City, TN, right? You ever come back to TN to ride?"

Bad stomach and from Tennessee too? Certainly we are related.
